REMOVING THE TYRE FROM THE RIM

Removing the wheel from a [safety] rim using Tyre Levers

Rule 1: When removing the tyre always start at the valve.

Rule 2: When re-fitting the tyre always finish at the valve.

Rule 3: Always work from the front of the wheel. Remove and replace the tyre from the front.

  • Insert the spoon end of the first lever under the bead near
    the valve.
  • At the same time place your foot on the opposite side of the tyre and push the tyre into the well of the rim. This will allow the tyre to move when you pull the tyre over the rim with the lever.
  • Pull back on the first lever until the tyre lifts over the rim. (if you have tubed tyres take care not to pinch the tube. )

Hint Prior to removing the tyre from the rim use chalk to mark the tyre to indicate where the valve and any wheel weights were. This ensures that the tyre will be placed back on the rim as near as possible to the original position.

  • Place your foot on the first lever and insert the spoon end of the second lever next to the section of the tyre which has already been lifted over the rim
  • Pull back on the second lever until that section of the tyre lifts over the rim.
  • Remove the first lever and repeat the procedure until the bead is entirely lifted over the rim.

Tubeless tyres... carefully check inside the tyre to locate and remove the object which caused the puncture.

Tubed tyres... remove the tube for repairs.

You will only need to take the tyre completely off the rim if the case needs to be changed or if have to do a major repair on the tyre.

  • To remove the second bead, stand the tyre up and push the rim through the tyre.
  • Insert both levers between the rim and the tyre bead.
  • Force the rim from the tyre by applying pressure down onto the tyre using both levers.

Hint If you are having difficulty removing the tyre from the rim apply a lubricant, such as detergent, around the bead.

  • Alternatively, you con remove the second bead using only one lever and a rubber mallet.
  • After you have pushed the rim through the tyre, insert the lever between the rim and the tyre bead.
  • Force the rim from the tyre by applying pressure to the lever whilst using the mallet to knock the tyre from the rim.
