INFLATING SPLIT
RIMS
Equipment required
Air compressor, rubber mallet, ground
sheet and a safety harness (or cage) to place wheel in whilst inflating.
WARNING: IF THE CORRECT PROCEDURE
15 NOT FOLLOWED DURING INFLATION OF SPLIT RIMS, THE RING CAN EXPLODE
AWAY FROM THE RIM AND BECOME AIRBORNE, AND MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY
OR DEATH TO PERSONS.
Procedure
Extreme care must be taken when inflating
a split rimmed wheel. You must use a safety harness or a safety
cage which has been specifically designed to be used during this
procedure. This is to ensure that in the event of the ring exploding
during inflation, it is restrained within the harness or safety
cage. The following procedure uses the Tyrepliers® Safety Harness.
-
Prior
to inflation the wheel, place the wheel inside the harness and tighten.
- The harness should be fitted around
the wheel in an equal and even position. After the harness has been
fitted, it should divide the wheel into 4 equal quadrants.
- The adjustable sheaths/webbing protectors
must be positioned over the split ring.
- The cam buckles should be connected
and adjusted so that the webbing fits tightly around the wheel.
- Inflate the tyre to 3-5 p.s.i. ONLY.
- Gently hammer the split ring (using
the rubber mallet), to ensure that the ring is bedded correctly.
THE WHEEL MUST BE INFLATED WITH THE RING LAID ON THE GROUND
SHEET FACING AWAY FROM THE OPERATOR OR PERSONS. DO NOT STAND OVER
THE WHEEL AS IT IS BEING INFLATED.
Continue to inflate the tyre to the recommended pressure
